Performing alongside star violinist Nicola Benedetti and under the baton of Artistic Director Scott Ellaway, Orchestra Europa makes its debut at the Cheltenham Festival, marking the culmination of its first year of full artistic operations. The programme includes Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, Schubert’s epic Ninth Symphony, ‘The Great’, and Mendelssohn’s Overture to Shakespeare’s ‘A Misummer Night’s Dream’. Mendelssohn famously revived a number of baroque works by Handel and Bach, including the St Matthew Passion. But he also conducted the first performance of Schubert’s final symphony, the ‘Great C Major’, a decade after the composer’s death.
