“The orchestra’s founder, Scott Ellaway, conducted clearly and with care, establishing judicious pacings for the two movements of the Schubert and drawing from the 50 or so players a sonority that was well-focused, balanced and with a healthy depth to it.”
“Orchestra Europa swooned and swerved under the direction of Scott Ellaway.” Recently named one of the UK’s top 10 conductors by BBC Music Magazine, Scott Ellaway made his professional debut at the age of twenty-one directing an ensemble made up from players from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera. Subsequent engagements included concerts with the Philharmonia, the Oxford Chamber Orchestra and the London Mozart Players, along with a workshop session with the New World Symphony. Ellaway has worked with a number of high-profile artists including the BBC Singers, Lisa Milne, James Bowman, David Owen Norris, Robin Blaze, and Nicola Benedetti whose concert with Ellaway was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from the Cheltenham Festival. Most recently, Ellaway was involved in Marin Alsop’s Bernstein project at London’s Southbank Centre. Ellaway is Artistic Director of UK-based music organisation Orchestra Europa, a unique organisation committed to supporting a number of music education schemes and performances, giving young people from all backgrounds a number of life-changing experiences. In the 2009-2010 season, in addition to continuing his dedicated work on Orchestra Europa’s extensive educational projects, Scott Ellaway will perform with pianist sensation Alexander Melnikov in a concert of Tchaikovsky’s first Piano Concerto at the Southbank Centre, London, and directs Birmingham Conservatoire’s Symphony Orchestra at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham. Educated at the University of Oxford, Ellaway has studied with Jorma Panula, the late Vernon Handley and Michael Tilson Thomas. |
